Barbaros Erköse — Biography

Barbaros Erköse, born in Bursa in 1936, is a Turkish clarinetist, ensemble leader, and composer. He picked up the clarinet at the age of nine, and by the time he reached secondary school he was already performing at weddings, a pace that led him to leave formal schooling early. At twelve he refined his playing under lessons from Saffet Gündeğer, and he later launched his professional career providing fasıl accompaniment for plays staged at Ankara's Şen Tiyatro, the venue associated with performer İsmail Dümbüllü. After five years there, he passed an entrance examination in 1955 and joined Ankara Radio.

A 1961 trip to Istanbul for an entertainment program turned into a permanent move, and Erköse went on to work at Istanbul Radio, sharing the stage with well-known figures such as Nesrin Sipahi and Zeki Müren. His career also extended abroad, where he recorded alongside musicians including Anouar Brahem and Peter Pannke and performed at numerous international concerts. Known for weaving a jazz-like framework into his improvisations, he is regarded as one of the pioneering clarinetists to bring a fusion sensibility rooted in Turkish-Romani musical tradition to wider audiences.
