Cemal Erçman — Biography
Also known as Gülleci Cemal, Cemal Erçman (born 1904 - died 1978) belonged to Turkey's first generation of weightlifters to compete on the international stage. Competing in the featherweight division (-60 kg), he is credited as the first Turkish weightlifter to represent the country at the Olympic Games, appearing at both the 1924 Paris and 1928 Amsterdam Games.
In Paris he placed 14th out of 22 competitors with a total lift of 345 kg, and four years later in Amsterdam he improved to 8th place with a 262.5 kg total — results recorded as Turkey's first international successes in the sport of weightlifting.
His athletic life extended well beyond competition: Erçman was among the founders of the Istanbul Gymnastics Club (İstanbul Jimnastik Kulübü), and he kept training in bodybuilding into old age, still taking part in competitions in 1968 at the age of 72.
