Deniz Gamze Ergüven — Biography
Deniz Gamze Ergüven (born 4 June 1978 in Ankara) is a Turkish-French film director, screenwriter and occasional actress who trained at La Fémis film school in Paris.
She rose to international attention with her debut feature Mustang (2015), the story of five orphaned sisters, which represented France in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 88th Academy Awards, earned a Golden Globe nomination, and won the European Film Award for European Discovery of the Year. Following this success, she was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in 2016 alongside fellow Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan.
After Mustang, Ergüven directed Kings (2018), starring Halle Berry and Daniel Craig, and moved into television as well, directing an episode of The Handmaid's Tale that went on to become one of the series' most highly rated installments among viewers.
