Gürer Aykal — Biography
Born on 22 May 1942 in the Çifteler district of Eskişehir, Gürer Aykal is one of Turkey's leading orchestral conductors. He trained at the Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory and later at Rome's Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and over his long career he was honored with the title of State Artist.
From 1988 he spent a period as chief conductor of the Presidential Symphony Orchestra, and between 1999 and 2009 he served as music director and principal conductor of the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, alongside his role as an adjunct professor at Bilkent University. The inaugural "Eskişehir International Gürer Aykal Conducting Competition," named in his honor, was held in 2026, with the top prize going to a conductor from Taiwan — a testament to his lasting influence on Turkish musical life.
