Ianis Hagi — Biography
Ianis Hagi (born 22 October 1998 in Istanbul) is a Romanian professional footballer. He was born in Turkey while his father, Gheorghe Hagi, was playing for Galatasaray, and also holds Turkish citizenship; he is the son of Romania's joint all-time leading scorer and the nephew of the former international Gheorghe Popescu. Left-footed, he plays as an attacking midfielder or winger.
Trained at the academy founded by his father, he made his professional debut for Viitorul Constanța at 16. He moved to Fiorentina in 2016 but played only two Serie A matches; he returned to Viitorul and won the Cupa României, then joined Belgian club Genk in 2019. In January 2020 he signed for Rangers on an initial loan later made permanent, helping them to the Scottish title the following season. After a spell with Alavés he joined Süper Lig club Alanyaspor, where he was playing in the 2025–26 season and where his goals drew comparisons with his father's.
He won his first full cap for Romania in a 3–0 UEFA Nations League win over Lithuania in November 2018 and has since passed fifty caps; at Euro 2024 Romania topped their group and reached the round of 16.
