İbrahim Kutluay — Biography

İbrahim Kutluay (born 7 January 1974) was one of European basketball's most prolific three-point shooters during his playing days at shooting guard, and later moved into club management and sports commentary after retiring.

Raised in Fenerbahçe's youth system and a member of the first team from 1991 to 1999, Kutluay set a record by scoring 50 points against Italy at the 1996 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship and added 41 points in a 1998–99 EuroLeague game against Cibona Zagreb. After moving to Efes Pilsen in 1999, he finished the season as the Turkish league's top scorer; joining Panathinaikos in 2001, he became the first Turkish player to win a EuroLeague title when the club captured the 2002 Final Four. He went on to play for the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2004–05 NBA season, becoming only the fourth Turk to appear in the league.

Kutluay received the Abdi İpekçi Peace and Friendship Communication Award in 2000, and after retiring he took on an executive role at Darüşşafaka while remaining a fixture in the media because of his fame and personal life. His son Ömer Kutluay has since emerged as a notable basketball player in his own right, keeping the family name in the sports headlines.
