Kamuran Gündemir — Biography

Kamuran Gündemir was a Turkish pianist and composer born in Ayvalık in 1933, whose name became closely tied to the Ankara State Conservatory. Introduced to music by his father, a tuba player in the local municipal band, he learned to read musical notation and began playing the accordion by the age of three.

Discovered by composer Adnan Saygun, who urged him to pursue formal training, Gündemir entered the Ankara State Conservatory in 1949 and graduated in 1958. He studied piano under Ferhunde Erkin and composition under Necil Kazım Akses and Ulvi Cemal Erkin, later continuing his studies at the Paris Conservatory under Lazare Lévy.

After returning to Turkey, he devoted himself to piano pedagogy, becoming known for premiering works by numerous contemporary Turkish composers and training pianists such as Muhiddin Dürrüoğlu-Demiriz, Fazıl Say, Emre Elivar and his final student, Mertol Demirelli. In 2001 he received an honorary gold medal from the Sevda-Cenap And Music Foundation. He died on 4 February 2006.
