Born in Ankara in 1959, Mehmet Murat Somer worked in banking and business consulting before turning to writing. He became one of the best-known names in Turkish crime fiction with his Hop-Çiki-Yaya series, set in Istanbul and centered on an unnamed amateur transvestite detective.
Writing primarily in the thriller and crime genres, Somer is considered one of the leading voices of queer literature in Turkey. He has also worked as a screenwriter for television; his IMDb credits include the 2003 series Hürrem Sultan.
