Mirsad Türkcan — Biography
Born Mirsad Jahović on 7 June 1976 in Novi Pazar, in what is now Serbia, Türkcan was the only son in a Bosniak family. After coming through Turkish club systems, he took Turkish citizenship and opted to represent Turkey internationally. His younger sister Emina Jahović became a well-known pop singer across the former Yugoslavia.
He began his professional career with Efes Pilsen from 1994 to 1998, then became the first Turkish player in the NBA after being picked in the first round by the Houston Rockets in 1998. Following a brief NBA stint, he played in France, Italy and Russia before returning to Turkey in 2005 with Ülkerspor. He spent his final seasons at Fenerbahçe Ülker, winning a Turkish league title, and retired with a farewell ceremony there on 16 September 2012.
Türkcan finished his EuroLeague career with 1,287 total rebounds, a record he held until Felipe Reyes surpassed it in January 2015; he was named to the All-EuroLeague Team three times and was declared a EuroLeague Legend in 2017. Since retiring as a player, he has moved into basketball management.
