Özdemir Erdoğan — Biography

Özdemir Erdoğan comes from a mixed background — Armenian on his mother's side, Circassian through his grandmother, and Black Sea Turkish through his father — and music ran in the family: his mother performed as a classical pianist, while his uncle played violin and piano. Formal arts training was largely out of reach for him in the 1940s; he finished school at Kadıköy Commerce High School in 1960, then did his military service teaching as a reserve officer in the Araplar village of Besni, Adıyaman.

Over his career he received the Honour Award at the Kral TV Video Music Awards in 2008, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts at the Istanbul Jazz Festival in 2016, and the Presidential Grand Award for Culture and Arts in 2020, in addition to being named a State Artist in 1998.
