Le Grand Voyage (Büyük Yolculuk)

Movie · 2004–2005 · 2 people

The Great Journey (French: Le Grand Voyage) is a 2004 drama film written and directed by Ismaël Ferroukhi, a co-production of Morocco, France and Bulgaria. The director's feature debut, which he reportedly scripted as early as 1998 before spending years securing financing, blends road-movie elements with a father–son story, starring Nicolas Cazalé and Mohamed Majd.

Réda, a young man of Moroccan descent raised in France and immersed in Western culture, has a distant relationship with his devout father. When the father asks him to drive him to Mecca so he can perform the Hajj pilgrimage before he dies, the reluctant son agrees, and the pair travel across Europe, the Balkans, Syria and Jordan toward Saudi Arabia. Along the way the generational and cultural gap between them slowly narrows. The film won the Golden Astor for Best Film at the 2005 Mar del Plata International Film Festival and screened at the 2004 Toronto and Venice film festivals.
