Da Vinci's Demons
Leonardo da Vinci's early life gets an invented retelling in Da Vinci's Demons, an American-British drama mixing history and fantasy. David S. Goyer conceived the series, which Starz launched on 12 April 2013, with BBC Worldwide and Adjacent Productions as production partners. It ran for 28 episodes over three seasons, the last airing from 24 October to 26 December 2015. The series reached more than 120 countries and won two Primetime Emmys, one for main title design and one for its original theme music.
The story follows the young inventor and artist in Renaissance Florence, where his extraordinary mind draws him into a struggle between the Medici and Pazzi families and the Catholic Church, each wanting to use him. Along the way Leonardo hunts for a mysterious text called the Book of Leaves and clashes with a cult known as the Sons of Mithras. Tom Riley takes the lead, with Laura Haddock, Blake Ritson, Elliot Cowan, Lara Pulver and Alexander Siddig in the cast; Hugh Bonneville and Philip Arditti guest.
Filming took place in Wales, and the first eight episodes are reported to have cost 20 million pounds. Marvel comic writers Jonathan Hickman and Matt Fraction wrote two second-season episodes. Starz announced the third season would be the last, though Goyer left open a miniseries return.
