Doctor Antonio

Doctor Antonio (Italian: Il dottor Antonio) is a 1937 Italian historical drama directed by Enrico Guazzoni. Written by Gherardo Gherardi and Gino Talamo, it is based on Giovanni Ruffini's 1855 novel of the same title.

The story unfolds during the Risorgimento, in the years when Ferdinand II ruled the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. A revolutionary leader falls in love with the daughter of an Englishman, and their romance becomes entangled with the political turmoil of the era. The leading roles are played by Ennio Cerlesi, Maria Gambarelli and Lamberto Picasso, with Guido Celano among the wider cast.

Production took place at the Cinecittà Studios in Rome, while location scenes were filmed on the island of Ischia off the Neapolitan coast. The sets were designed by Gherardi, who also co-wrote the screenplay.
