Domina
Told from a female point of view, the British-Italian historical drama Domina looks at the power struggles of Ancient Rome. Created and mostly written by Simon Burke, it comes from Sky Studios and Tiger Aspect Productions. The first season premiered on Sky Atlantic in Italy and the UK on May 14, 2021, and in the United States it aired on MGM+ (formerly Epix). The second season began in the US on July 9, 2023, and the run ended in Europe on August 13, 2023. Cancelled in April 2024 after two seasons, the series has 16 episodes in all and drew mostly positive reviews.
At its heart is Livia Drusilla, wife of Augustus. It traces a naive young girl whose world falls apart after Julius Caesar's assassination as she becomes Rome's most powerful empress, driven to avenge her father and secure power for her sons. Young Livia is played by Nadia Parkes in the first two episodes and by Kasia Smutniak from the third. The cast also includes Liam Cunningham, Matthew McNulty, Claire Forlani and Isabella Rossellini. The first season follows Livia's rise, and the second her effort to impose her dynasty on rivals at court. Livia and those around her survive a brutal society through strategy, conspiracy, seduction and murder.
