From the Edge of the City

From the Edge of the City (Greek: Από την άκρη της πόλης) is a 1998 Greek drama film written and directed by Konstantinos Giannaris. Backed by the Greek Film Centre and Mythos Production, the roughly 94-minute film features dialogue in both Greek and Russian and has been associated with LGBTQ-related cinema.

The story follows young Pontian Greeks who emigrated from the former Soviet Union and struggle to get by in the working-class outskirts of Athens; the protagonist Sasha's search for easy money pulls him into the city's shadowy underworld. Stathis Papadopoulos leads the cast, alongside Theodora Tzimou, Aimilios Cheilakis, Tasos Nousias and Argyris Xafis. Greece selected the film as its official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 72nd Academy Awards, though it ultimately did not receive a nomination.
