Happy-Go-Lucky
Mike Leigh wrote and directed Happy-Go-Lucky (Daima Mutlu in Turkey), a British comedy-drama from 2008 that runs about 118 minutes. At its centre is a primary school teacher of cheerful, optimistic temperament. It premiered on 12 February 2008 at the 58th Berlin International Film Festival, and opened in the UK on 18 April 2008. It grossed about $18.7 million worldwide and was made with public money and National Lottery funds.
The story is set in London. Poppy (Sally Hawkins) looks at life differently from the typical Briton, seeing the good side of events and showing kindness even to those who treat her badly. That does not make her shallow; without realising it she makes the world better. The film follows her relationships with friends, pupils and her bitter driving instructor Scott (Eddie Marsan). Alexis Zegerman has a supporting role, with Sylvestra Le Touzel, Samuel Roukin, Andrea Riseborough and Philip Arditti also in the cast.
As in Leigh's other films, much of the dialogue and many situations were improvised. At Berlin Hawkins won the Silver Bear for Best Actress, then the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy at the 66th ceremony, and Leigh was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 81st Academy Awards. Critics praised Leigh's direction and Hawkins and Marsan.
