Inspector De Luca

Inspector De Luca (Il commissario De Luca)

TV Series · 2008 · 13 people

Carlo Lucarelli's De Luca detective trilogy, written between 1990 and 1996, is the basis of Il commissario De Luca (Inspector De Luca), a four-part Italian miniseries. Produced by RAI, it aired on Rai 1 from 27 April to 11 May 2008. Antonio Frazzi directed. Lucarelli also created Inspector Coliandro; the novels are bestsellers. On the American DVD box the series is titled Detective De Luca, and its tagline introduces the hero as neither a fascist nor a partisan, just a cop.

The story spreads over Italy's turbulent decade from 1938 to 1948. From the years of Fascism into the confusion that followed the war, Inspector De Luca solves crimes in war-damaged Bologna and along the Adriatic coast. He cares little who is in charge; policing is the one job he knows. He is solitary and uncompromising, and he has a strong effect on women. Because he is too skilled and honest a policeman to do anything but uncover the truth, he sometimes lands in trouble with whichever side holds authority that day. The result is a portrait of an iconoclastic investigator.

Alessandro Preziosi plays the lead. Kasia Smutniak, Corrado Fortuna, Rolando Ravello, Stefano Pesce, Raffaella Rea, Richard Sammel and Ken Duken are also in the cast.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

As a four-part miniseries it is no season-long marathon, and in my view the brevity works in De Luca's favour. The character is built as a stubborn cop who stays the same under every regime, and the real hook is what that consistency will cost him. Squeezing a whole decade into four episodes may have a price, though: the jumps between periods can feel rushed, and a large supporting cast has little room to deepen. For readers of Lucarelli's novels, seeing the character on screen is a draw in itself.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The most interesting choice is to set a detective story in Italy's breaking-point years of 1938 to 1948. Through Fascism, the war and the confusion that followed, the side holding power keeps changing, and no investigation can stay clear of politics. That is why the tagline 'neither a fascist nor a partisan, just a cop' is a debatable claim: the official who does his job whoever is in charge raises questions about honesty and about the limits of neutrality alike. War-damaged Bologna and the Adriatic coast make a strong backdrop for a society reckoning with its past.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

It carries crime and action labels, but don't expect a chase show. In my view the weight sits on period atmosphere and drama, so anyone after a fast pace may find stretches heavy going. Still, an investigator who bows to no one and clashes with every regime is solid ground for tension. A good crime story if you have the patience.
