Jerichow
Jerichow is a 2008 German drama written and directed by Christian Petzold, a loose adaptation of James M. Cain's 1934 novel The Postman Always Rings Twice. The story unfolds in the north-eastern German town that gives the film its title. Thomas, a soldier discharged after serving in Afghanistan, moves into the house his late mother left him and struggles with unemployment and debt. He takes a job with Ali, a Turkish-German entrepreneur who owns a chain of snack bars, and soon grows close to Ali's wife Laura. Their affair quietly erodes the trust between the three and leads toward a dangerous reckoning. Benno Fürmann, Nina Hoss and Hilmi Sözer star. The film opened the competition of the 65th Venice Film Festival and was nominated for Best Feature Film and Best Director at the 2009 German Film Prize. Its official German release followed on 8 January 2009.
