Nymphomaniac: Volume I

Nymphomaniac: Volume I is the first half of a two-part project written and directed by Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier, first released in late 2013. The story begins on a cold winter night when Seligman, a solitary bachelor, discovers Joe beaten and abandoned in an alley and takes her into his home. Identifying herself as a nymphomaniac, Joe spends the night recounting her life from birth to age fifty, focusing above all on her countless erotic encounters, told in chapters while Seligman listens with fascination.

Shot in English as a co-production between Denmark, Germany and France, the film continues the provocative path Trier pursued with Antichrist and Melancholia, blending drama, mystery and erotic material within a segmented narrative. Charlotte Gainsbourg stars as the adult Joe opposite Stellan Skarsgård as Seligman, with Stacy Martin playing the younger Joe. The ensemble also includes Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Jamie Bell, Jean-Marc Barr and Udo Kier.
