One Day in August

Written and directed by Konstantinos Giannaris, this 2001 Greek drama takes its original title, Δεκαπενταύγουστος, from the August 15th holiday, when Athens largely empties out. Running about 106 minutes, the film was produced with the backing of the Greek Film Centre and Piece of Cake. Its theme song features music by Akis Daoutis, lyrics by Takis Syrellis, and vocals by Glykeria.

Set in a city left to its holiday silence, the story blends metaphysical elements and symbolism while exploring the desire to escape, the hope for a miracle, death and faith, with motherhood and the parent-child bond at its core. Eleni Kastani and Akilas Karazisis head the cast, which also includes Theodora Tzimou, Emilios Chilakis and Michalis Iatropoulos.
