Sleeping Beauty

La bella addormentata is a 1942 Italian film directed by Luigi Chiarini. Luisa Ferida, Amedeo Nazzari and Osvaldo Valenti headline the cast, which also includes Guido Celano. Though chiefly a drama, it carries comic touches as well.

The picture adapts Pier Maria Rosso di San Secondo's 1919 stage play of the same name, with Chiarini sharing screenplay duties with Umberto Barbaro and Vitaliano Brancati. It was shot at Rome's Centro sperimentale di cinematografia studios and produced by Cines.

Presented at the 1942 Venice Film Festival, the film is regarded as a notable example of the calligrafismo movement that marked Italian cinema in the early 1940s.
