Tintin and the Golden Fleece (Tintin et le Mystère de la Toison d'or)
Hergé's comic hero Tintin makes his first live-action appearance in Tintin and the Golden Fleece (Tintin et le mystère de la Toison d'or), a French-Belgian adventure from 1961 in which actors are made up to resemble the characters. Hergé took no part, and the story is an original adventure drawn from the albums' characters, not from any single book. It opened in France on 6 December 1961.
The story is set in Turkey and Greece. Captain Haddock learns that a dead sailor friend has left him a ship called the Golden Fleece. Tintin, Snowy and Haddock travel to Istanbul to find it, but find only a neglected cargo vessel. When a businessman named Anton offers a large sum for the ship, they grow suspicious and resolve to solve its mystery. Jean-Pierre Talbot plays Tintin and Georges Wilson plays Haddock, with Charles Vanel (Père Alexandre), Dario Moreno (Midas Papos) and Marcel Bozzuffi (Angaropoulos) in the cast.
Jean-Jacques Vierne directed from a script by André Barret and Rémo Forlani. Filming took place in Istanbul. Many Tintin scholars rate it among the best films featuring the character. A book version using film stills was also made. A less successful sequel, Tintin and the Blue Oranges, followed.
