Zuhal Üstüntaş was born in 1930 in Istanbul; the exact day and month of her birth are not confirmed by available sources. During the Yeşilçam era of Turkish cinema she worked both as an actress and as an assistant director, remaining active in the industry for many years.

She is best remembered for playing "Osman's Mother" in the 1983 film Tokatçı, and her filmography also includes the 1990 production Acı Kader. Combining on-screen roles with behind-the-scenes work as an assistant director, Üstüntaş contributed to Turkish cinema of the period in more than one capacity.
