Arif Aşçı — Biography
Arif Aşçı (born 1958, Adana) is a Turkish photographer and art historian. He studied painting at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1982, and worked as an assistant at the same academy between 1984 and 1986. In 1986 he left his post and set off on a journey across Asia that lasted until 1989; during this journey he turned to photography, and after the trip he produced the 12-part television documentary Turquoise.
From 1996 onwards, with a team of four, he photographed the historic Silk Road from China to Türkiye over 18 months, travelling by camel caravan; this work was published in 1998 as the book The Last Caravan On The Silk Road. His books Bahtabakan (2000) and Many Colors, One City (2005) followed, and between 2003 and 2007 he photographed Istanbul with a panoramic camera. His works have been exhibited in Türkiye and abroad; as an actor, he appeared in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's films Uzak (2002) and İklimler (2006).
