Cem Karaca — Biography
Muhtar Cem Karaca (born 5 April 1945 in Bakırköy, Istanbul – died 8 February 2004 in Istanbul) was a Turkish rock musician, lyricist and composer regarded as one of the founders of the Anatolian rock movement, who also worked occasionally in film and theatre. A graduate of Robert College, he was the son of Mehmet Karaca, of Azerbaijani descent, and singer Toto Karaca, who was of Armenian descent.
Over his career he founded or led several bands, including Apaşlar, Kardaşlar, Moğollar and Dervişan, bringing a new interpretation to Turkish rock. From the late 1960s into the 1980s, his socially engaged lyrics made him one of the defining voices of protest music in Turkey.
More than two decades after his death, Karaca's legacy endures: his songs are still performed at commemorative concerts held in cities across Turkey, from Denizli to İzmir and Kuşadası.
