Charlotte Vandermeersch — Biography
Charlotte Vandermeersch grew up in Wannegem, a small village near Kruishoutem, though she was actually born in nearby Oudenaarde; she has three brothers, Edward, Karel and Antoon. Once she left secondary school she trained as an actress at the Herman Teirlinck Institute in Antwerp, and for close to a decade, from 2012 until 2020, she performed with the Lazarus theatre ensemble. Her personal and professional life is closely tied to filmmaker Felix van Groeningen, her partner and the father of their son Rufus. Together the couple adapted a novel into the screenplay for The Eight Mountains, which she also co-directed; the film earned a jury prize at Cannes in 2022 and later swept Italy's top film honours, the David di Donatello, for both picture and adapted screenplay. Flemish cinema recognised her further in 2025 by naming her that year's Master of the Ostend Film Festival. Her earlier credits as a performer include Çatı Katı, Vermist, Turquaze and Çölde Kutup Ayısı, along with a notable turn as Isabelle in Belgica.
