Loft

Movie · 2008 · 15 people

A Belgian thriller from 2008, Loft (Turkish title: Çatı Katı) was directed by Erik Van Looy from a screenplay by Bart De Pauw and produced by Woestijnvis. Shot in Belgian Dutch and running about 115 minutes, it opened on October 22, 2008. Its German release title is Loft – Tödliche Affären. With a large ensemble of Flemish actors, it is also described as an erotic mystery.

The story begins in a luxurious penthouse in Antwerp that five close friends, all married, secretly use to meet their mistresses. One morning they wake to find the lifeless body of a young woman none of them knows. Since the apartment has only five keys, suspicion takes hold; each man starts to doubt the others and sees that he knows them far less well than he thought. Koen De Bouw plays Chris Van Outryve, Filip Peeters is Vincent Stevens and Koen De Graeve is Marnix Laureys, with Bruno Vanden Broecke, Matthias Schoenaerts, Jan Decleir (Ludwig Tyberghein), Veerle Baetens and Charlotte Vandermeersch also in the cast.

Seen by 1,194,434 people, it overtook Koko Flanel to become the most-watched Belgian film of its time. It also reached Turkish audiences at the 28th Istanbul Film Festival.

Through different eyes

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Five keys, five suspects and one secret flat: Loft sets up the most basic arithmetic of the closed-room mystery and generates its tension from that narrow equation. Bart De Pauw's script is built less on the murder than on what the characters don't know about each other; suspicion is the real engine of the plot. That structure puts a heavy load on the editing, because the order in which information is revealed is everything. My reservation: as the double lives of five married men are woven through a large cast, the characters may not stand apart enough, and the mystery risks becoming a puzzle driven by mechanism rather than by people. Still, becoming the most-watched Belgian film of its day shows the formula was well executed.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A body of a woman they don't know in their secret flat, and only five people with keys: that set-up hooks you from the first minute. But let me say it up front: don't expect chases or fights here; the tension comes entirely from suspicion and mutual accusation. If you have patience for dialogue-heavy scenes it is a solid whodunit; if not, it can feel heavy in places.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Loft's mystery starts with a body, but what it really exposes is the double lives of five married men and how fragile their friendship is. A luxury flat hidden from everyone is an apt symbol of the secrets behind respectable middle-class life. However, because the set-up places women mostly in the position of mistress or victim, the story risks being trapped in a male gaze. That leaves open whether the film critiques the men's world or reproduces it; in my view, keeping that question in mind makes the film more interesting.
