Kâmil Sönmez — Biography
After completing military service between 1966 and 1968, Kâmil Sönmez began his professional stage career at the Avni Dilligil Theatre, then went on to perform with the Kardeş Oyuncular Theatre and later Ankara Sahnesi. While still working in theatre, he made his recording debut with İnce Memed - Hekimoğlu, produced by Zülfü Livaneli, and joined state radio after passing a folk-singing examination.
He released a cassette titled Karadeniz Disko through the Türkola label, and from 1996 until his death served as a soloist with the State Turkish Folk Music Choir. Following a brain haemorrhage he suffered on 4 December 2012, he died while under treatment at the Başkent University Istanbul Hospital on 20 December 2012.
