Matthew Pillsbury — Biography

Matthew Pillsbury (born 25 November 1973 in Neuilly-sur-Seine) is a French-born American photographer based in New York City. After studying at the École alsacienne in Paris, he continued his education at Yale University. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Prix HSBC pour la photographie.

In his Screen Lives series, inspired by Hiroshi Sugimoto's cinema photographs, he used long-exposure black-and-white photography to capture family and friends absorbed in computer and television screens. In 2004, The New York Times Magazine commissioned him to photograph New York museums after closing hours, including an installation shot inside the Guggenheim Museum. He later extended the project to museums in London and Paris, photographing, among other works, the Mona Lisa at the Louvre.

At age ten, he made his only film appearance in France, playing the son of the heroine portrayed by Catherine Deneuve in Francis Girod's Le Bon Plaisir (1984).
