Metin Çekmez — Biography

Metin Çekmez was a veteran actor who moved from the İstanbul City Theatres company into nearly five decades of stage, film and television work. A familiar face of Yeşilçam, he is remembered above all as Cevdet in Süper Baba, Burhan Evliyaoğlu in Binbir Gece and Rıza Yılmaz in Adını Feriha Koydum. He was the younger brother of the actor Dinçer Çekmez.

He met the stage in 1962, when he and his brother sat the City Theatres' entrance examination. Muhsin Ertuğrul's team picked the two brothers from 350 candidates, and both appeared as extras in Hamlet. After Pertevniyal High School he attended a private journalism school, learned acting through an apprenticeship, and joined the City Theatres' permanent company in 1970. His stage work included Kurt, Cyrano de Bergerac, Othello, Macbeth and Ağrı Dağı Efsanesi.

He reached the screen in 1972 with Ertem Eğilmez's Tatlı Dillim, and later appeared in Boşver Arkadaş, Atla Gel Şaban, Firar, Siyabend-ü Xece and Komser Şekspir. On television he played Necmettin Solmaz in 20 Dakika and Ziya Yörükhan in Kaderimin Yazıldığı Gün. He died on 25 August 2021 in Aydın, in the hospital where he was being treated for tongue-base cancer, and was buried the next day at Kuşadası Davutlar Cemetery.
