Ömer Küyük — Biography

Ömer Küyük was born around 1900 in the village of Çatkara, in the İskilip district of Çorum Province, and served as a marksman private during the Turkish War of Independence. Well into his hundreds he still hunted and chopped his own firewood, and those around him remembered him as a lively, warm-hearted man; he died in Çorum on 12 January 2006 at the age of 106.

Director Nesli Çölgeçen's documentary Son Buluşma captured Küyük's memories and daily life alongside two other last witnesses of the war, Yakup Satar and Veysel Turan, preserving the final filmed footage of all three veterans. A father of eight and grandfather of thirty-six, Küyük kept up a lifelong tradition of traveling from his hometown to Ankara every Victory Week to visit Anıtkabir and the Veterans' Association.
