An American science-fiction adventure from Walt Disney Pictures, the film was directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, produced by Don Hahn and written by Tab Murphy. Set in 1914, it follows Milo Thatch, a young linguist who comes into possession of a sacred book and joins a crew of mercenaries on an expedition to find the lost city of Atlantis. The original English voice cast features Michael J. Fox, James Garner and Leonard Nimoy, among others.

After premiering at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on 3 June 2001 and opening wide on 15 June, the film drew mixed reviews and grossed over 186 million dollars worldwide against a budget estimated at 90-120 million. It earned numerous award nominations, including seven Annie Award nods, and won Best Sound Editing at the 2002 Golden Reel Awards. A direct-to-video sequel, Atlantis: Milo's Return, followed in 2003, and the film has since been reappraised and gained a cult following.
