Bamako

Bamako is a 2006 French-American-Malian drama film written and directed by Abderrahmane Sissako. The film portrays a fictional trial set up in a backyard on the outskirts of Mali's capital, where African civil society puts the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in the dock over their role in the continent's poverty. As the opposing sides argue whether international institutions or local corruption and mismanagement are to blame, the film also examines how European colonialism shaped African societies and their enduring hardships.

Bamako premiered out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2006, where it was well received. It opened in France on 18 October 2006 through Les Films du Losange and reached US screens on 14 February 2007 via New Yorker Films. The cast includes Aïssa Maïga, Habib Dembélé and Danny Glover.
