Danny Glover — Biography

Danny Glover (born Daniel Leburn Glover on July 22, 1946, in San Francisco) is an American actor, producer and civil-rights activist. He made his film debut in 1979's Escape from Alcatraz and became internationally known for playing police detective Roger Murtaugh opposite Mel Gibson in the Lethal Weapon series (1987-1998). His screen credits also include Places in the Heart, The Color Purple, Witness, Predator 2, Grand Canyon and 2012, and in the 2010s he took on roles in independent films such as Sorry to Bother You and The Dead Don't Die.

On television, Glover earned four Primetime Emmy nominations for Mandela, Lonesome Dove, Fallen Angels and Freedom Song, and held recurring parts on Hill Street Blues, ER and Brothers & Sisters. Through his production company Louverture Films he has backed socially engaged projects, and in 2022 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored him with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

A longtime advocate for civil rights, racial equality and humanitarian causes, Glover serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and is a member of the TransAfrica Forum; he was awarded Cuba's National Medal of Friendship for this work. In the summer of 2026, several press reports indicated that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
