Manderlay

Manderlay is a 2005 drama film written and directed by Lars von Trier, the second installment of his projected "USA: Land of Opportunities" trilogy and a direct sequel to Dogville. Co-produced by seven European countries led by Denmark, it was staged much like its predecessor, on a sparsely dressed sound stage resembling a black box theater.

Set in 1933, the story follows Grace and her father as they leave Dogville and roam the American South, arriving at the Manderlay plantation, where slavery has never been abolished. Outraged, Grace stays behind with some of her father's gangsters to prepare the enslaved people for freedom, but her idealistic intervention backfires in unexpected ways. Bryce Dallas Howard replaces Nicole Kidman as Grace, alongside Willem Dafoe, Danny Glover, Lauren Bacall and Isaach de Bankolé; only John Hurt, Udo Kier and Jean-Marc Barr reprise their earlier roles. The film screened in competition at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.
