Based Down South

Based Down South (German: Wir sitzen im Süden) is a 2010 German-Turkish documentary film written and directed by Martina Priessner. Shot in German, it tells the story of four Turks who were born and raised in Germany but now live in Istanbul.

Bülent, Murat, Fatoş and Çiğdem share childhood and youth memories of Germany, yet only Çiğdem chose life in Istanbul of her own free will; the others were sent back by their families or deported. The film explores how these people, who never truly felt at home in their parents' country, built a kind of substitute Germany for themselves. It premiered at the 29th International Istanbul Film Festival and went on to screen at festivals including Leipzig and the London Turkish Film Festival, earning a Grimme Award nomination in 2011.
