City of Shadows

City of Shadows (La Cité in French) is a 2010 Canadian film written and directed by Kim Nguyen. Conceived as a drama with a historical backdrop, it is not a direct adaptation of Albert Camus' novel *The Plague*, but is partly inspired by it.

The film centers on Maxime Vincent, a war physician played by Jean-Marc Barr. Assigned to North Africa, he encounters a city ravaged by the bubonic plague and is drawn into a medical and moral test within this closed world where the disease is spreading. The cast also includes Claude Legault, Pierre Lebeau, Sabine Karsenti, Lotfi Abdelli, and Lotfi Dziri; the film's original music was composed by Philippe Héritier.

Filming took place in Tunisia in 2008, but due to financial problems experienced by its initial distributor, Christal Films, the film's commercial release was delayed until 2010. The production received five nominations at the 13th Jutra Awards: best director, cinematography (Nicolas Bolduc), art direction (Patrice Vermette), costume design (Mariane Carter), and original music.
