Don Cesare di Bazan

Movie · 1942 · 1 person

Don Cesare di Bazan is a 1942 Italian historical adventure film. Carrying the marks of the cloak-and-sword tradition, it was Riccardo Freda's first full-length feature as a director; he later became one of Italy's leading commercial filmmakers. Running about 76 minutes, it opened in Italy on October 4, 1942.

The story is set during the Catalan Revolt, which lasted from 1640 to 1659. The film is adapted from the 1844 play of the same name by Philippe Dumanoir and Adolphe d'Ennery, with a screenplay by Freda, Vitaliano Brancati and Cesare Zavattini. Gino Cervi, Anneliese Uhlig and Paolo Stoppa take the leading roles, and the cast also includes Guido Celano, Enrico Glori, Enzo Biliotti, Giovanni Grasso and Carlo Duse.

Twenty years later, in 1962, Freda returned to the material with a "distant" remake, Sept épées pour le roi.
