Gang of Four

Movie · 1989–1990 · 1 people

Gang of Four, originally titled La bande des quatre, is a 1989 French-Swiss co-production directed by Jacques Rivette, who co-wrote the screenplay with Pascal Bonitzer. Shot in French, the roughly 160-minute film blends drama and mystery. It competed at the 39th Berlin International Film Festival, where it received an Honourable Mention.

The story follows a group of young women who share a house in a Paris suburb while taking acting classes in the city. Their teacher Constance, a former actress, demands absolute loyalty and keeps her students in constant insecurity. After one roommate leaves, a mysterious man approaches each woman separately, and his conflicting accounts connect to a police investigation seeking evidence against a judge. Rivette blurs the boundary between rehearsal and real life, weaving themes of performance and deception. The cast includes Bulle Ogier, Benoît Régent, Laurence Côte, Nathalie Richard, and Irène Jacob.
