Gebo and the Shadow

Gebo and the Shadow is a 2012 French-Portuguese drama directed by Manoel de Oliveira, who also wrote the screenplay based on Raul Brandão's play of the same name. The work contemplates the ties between material hardship and moral decline through a restrained, stage-like approach. Its principal cast includes Michael Lonsdale, Claudia Cardinale and Jeanne Moreau.

The picture screened out of competition at the 69th Venice International Film Festival. It marked the closing chapter of de Oliveira's directing career, as he was 104 when it reached audiences, and it also counted among the final screen roles of Jeanne Moreau, who died in 2017. Critics responded warmly, and the film earned a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.
