Claudia Cardinale — Biography
Italian cinema had one of its great female stars in Claude Joséphine Rose Cardinale, known to the world as Claudia Cardinale, who was born on 15 April 1938 in La Goulette, Tunisia, and died on 23 September 2025 in Nemours, France. Over a career lasting more than six decades she appeared in well over one hundred and fifty films, mainly Italian and French productions, moving easily among comedies, dramas, spaghetti westerns and historical spectacles. Ranked alongside Sophia Loren, Monica Vitti, Silvana Mangano, Anna Magnani and Gina Lollobrigida as one of the defining actresses of her country's screen tradition, she later took French citizenship and was remembered at her death as one of the last living legends of European cinema's golden age.
She was born into an Italian family of Sicilian origin and grew up in La Goulette, a port district near Tunis. In 1957 she won a beauty contest titled "Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia"; the prize, a trip to the Venice Film Festival, quickly led to film offers, largely thanks to producer Franco Cristaldi, who mentored her for several years and eventually became her husband. She studied at Rome's Experimental Centre of Cinematography and made her screen debut in 1958, playing a small part opposite the Egyptian star Omar Sharif in Jacques Baratier's Goha.
Throughout the sixties she rose to become one of Italy's most recognizable performers. Luchino Visconti's Rocco and His Brothers (1960) and The Leopard (1963), together with Girl with a Suitcase (1961), Philippe de Broca's swashbuckler Cartouche (1962) and Federico Fellini's 8½ (1963), brought her international fame. The press of that decade frequently proclaimed her the most beautiful woman in the world, and in 1961 French newspapers began printing her initials "CC" as a wink at Brigitte Bardot's "BB".
From 1963 she also reached American and British audiences through Blake Edwards's The Pink Panther, in which she starred opposite David Niven. After Hollywood pictures such as Blindfold (1966), Lost Command (1966) and The Professionals (1966), she earned wide praise in Sergio Leone's western Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), playing Jill, a former prostitute, alongside Jason Robards, Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda. Weary of Hollywood and determined not to become a cliché, she returned to Italian and French cinema, where she won the David di Donatello Best Actress award for The Day of the Owl (1968) and again for her role opposite Alberto Sordi in A Girl in Australia (1971).
In 1974 she met director Pasquale Squitieri, who became her partner; she appeared regularly in his films, including I guappi (1974), Corleone (1978) and Claretta (1984), the last of which brought her the Nastro d'Argento for Best Actress. In 1982 she played the love interest of Klaus Kinski's character in Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo. She never really retired: in Signora Enrica (2010), filmed in Turkey, she portrayed an elderly Italian woman who takes in a young Turkish exchange student, a performance that earned her the Best Actress award at the 47th Antalya Golden Orange International Film Festival. Manoel de Oliveira's Gebo and the Shadow (2012) stands among her late works.
Her many honours included five David di Donatello awards and five Nastri d'Argento, a career Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1993 and an honorary Golden Bear at the Berlinale in 2002, as well as the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and France's Légion d'honneur. An outspoken advocate of women's rights, she served from March 2000 onward as a UNESCO goodwill ambassador for the defence of women's rights, and in 2011 the Los Angeles Times Magazine listed her among the fifty most beautiful women in film history. She died at her home in Nemours on 23 September 2025.
