Jean-Claude Brialy — Biography

Jean-Claude Brialy came into the world on 30 March 1933 in Aumale, Algeria, and died on 30 May 2007 in Monthyon, Seine-et-Marne; he worked as a French actor, film director, screenwriter and author. His Algerian birthplace, now called Sour El-Ghozlane, owed to the fact that his father was serving there with the French army; in 1942, when Jean-Claude was nine, the family returned to France. He attended the Prytanée National Militaire and the David d'Angers lycée in Angers before training as an actor at the Strasbourg Conservatory.

His film career began in 1956, and by the end of that decade he had risen to become one of the most industrious performers of the French New Wave. He took the lead as François Baillou in Claude Chabrol's debut feature Le Beau Serge (1958), then played Paul Thomas in Chabrol's Kuzenler (1959). A brief appearance came in François Truffaut's 400 Darbe (1959), while in Jean-Luc Godard's Kadın Kadındır (1961) he took on the part of Émile Récamier. Over a working life of more than half a century he accumulated upwards of two hundred screen credits, collaborating with Louis Malle, Éric Rohmer, Agnès Varda, Jacques Rozier, Roger Vadim, Philippe de Broca, Mauro Bolognini, Henri Verneuil, Costa-Gavras, Luis Buñuel, Ettore Scola and Claude Lelouch, alternating between starring vehicles and character roles.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s he worked without pause in parts of every scale. Among the memorable titles of that period are King of Hearts (1966), Truffaut's Siyah Gelinlik (1968), Rohmer's Claire's Knee (1970) and Buñuel's Le Fantôme de la liberté (1974).

Besides acting, he moved behind the camera: he directed Églantine (1971), and for L'Oiseau rare (1973) he served as director, screenwriter and leading man all at once. Television audiences saw him in productions such as Kraliçe Margot (1994) and the miniseries A Cursed Monarchy (2005). He also published books and remained active on the stage over many years.

His performance as the prosecutor in The Judge and the Assassin (1976) earned him a 1977 César nomination for Best Supporting Actor; he won that same award in 1988 for his work in Les Innocents. The French state decorated him as Commander of the Légion d'honneur and Commander of the National Order of Merit. Following a prolonged illness he passed away at his home in Monthyon on 30 May 2007, at the age of 74, and was buried at the Montmartre Cemetery in Paris. Across five decades he left behind a body of work that spanned the New Wave generation to the French cinema of the new millennium.
