Beaumarchais

Movie · 1996 · 4 people

Directed by Édouard Molinaro, this 1996 French biographical drama traces the life of Pierre Beaumarchais, the eighteenth-century playwright, financier and sometime spy. Fabrice Luchini plays the title figure, following his exploits during the American War of Independence and his creation of the celebrated Figaro trilogy of plays.

Adapted from an unpublished stage work by Sacha Guitry, the film features Sandrine Kiberlain, Manuel Blanc, Jean-Claude Brialy and Michel Serrault alongside Luchini. Part of the production was shot at the Hôtel de Besenval, a historic Parisian mansion that has long served as the Swiss embassy. Blending comedy and drama, the picture portrays Beaumarchais as a quick-witted, audacious man whose talents carried him from watchmaking workshops to royal courts and into the heart of political intrigue.
