Michel Serrault — Biography

Born on 24 January 1928 in Brunoy, Michel Serrault trained at the Cours Simon before launching his screen career in 1954. Over a career spanning more than five decades and above 130 productions, he became one of his generation's most beloved comic performers, later gravitating toward darker, eccentric outsider roles as well.

He remains the only performer to win the César for Best Actor three separate times: for playing Zaza Napoli in La Cage aux Folles in 1979, for Garde à vue in 1982, and for Nelly et Monsieur Arnaud in 1996. Among his many honors was appointment as an Officer of the Légion d'Honneur. He returned to the role of Zaza in the La Cage aux Folles sequels and appeared in Malevil, Belphégor, and the French dub of Amélie. He died on 29 July 2007 near Honfleur.
