La Reine Margot (film, 1994)

La Reine Margot is a 1994 Franco-Italian-German historical drama directed by Patrice Chéreau, who co-wrote the screenplay with Danièle Thompson. Adapted from Alexandre Dumas' 1845 novel of the same name, it stars Isabelle Adjani, Daniel Auteuil, Jean-Hugues Anglade, Vincent Perez and Virna Lisi, with music by Goran Bregović.

Set in 16th-century France amid the conflict between Catholics and Protestant Huguenots, the film follows Catherine de Médicis' marriage of her daughter Margot to Henri of Navarre, a union that leads to the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, while Margot's love affair with La Môle unfolds against court intrigue. Shot over more than six months in France and Portugal in 1993, it premiered at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, winning the Jury Prize and Best Actress for Lisi, and went on to receive five César Awards.
