Inspecteur Lavardin

Inspecteur Lavardin is a 1986 French-Swiss crime film co-written and directed by Claude Chabrol, with Dominique Roulet as his co-screenwriter. It serves as a sequel to Chabrol's 1984 film Cop au vin (Poulet au vinaigre), with Jean Poiret once again playing the unconventional police inspector Lavardin. In this outing, the inspector is sent to a small coastal town to investigate a murder, and his inquiry draws him into the tangled private lives of the victim's family and the local community, where he also encounters a figure from his own past. True to Chabrol's style, the film peels back the respectable surface of provincial bourgeois life to expose the secrets beneath it. The supporting cast includes Jean-Claude Brialy and Bernadette Lafont.
