Rocco and His Brothers (Rocco ve Kardeşleri)

Luchino Visconti's 1960 French-Italian co-production depicts the disintegration of the Parondi family, who flee poverty in southern Italy's Basilicata region for the industrial city of Milan. The widowed mother Rosaria tries to hold the family together with her five sons Vincenzo, Simone, Rocco, Ciro and Luca, while the boxer Simone and his brother Rocco (Alain Delon), who follows him into the ring and quickly becomes a star, clash over a woman. The screenplay, inspired by an episode from Giovanni Testori's novel Il ponte della Ghisolfa, was co-written by Visconti with Suso Cecchi d'Amico and Pasquale Festa Campanile.

Regarded as a late masterpiece of Italian neorealism, the black-and-white film is structured in five parts, one for each brother, and runs 177 minutes with music by Nino Rota. Featuring one of Claudia Cardinale's early roles, it won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and was included in 2008 on the Italian Ministry of Culture's list of 100 Italian films to be saved.
