Alberto Sordi — Biography

Alberto Sordi was born in Rome on 15 June 1920 and died in the same city on 24 February 2003. Widely counted among the great names of Italian film, he worked as an actor while also directing, writing and lending his voice to dubbed roles. He entered the business through theatre and dubbing work, becoming known to a wide public for voicing the heavier half of Laurel and Hardy in Italian. Across a career of more than sixty years he took part in over one hundred fifty pictures and personally directed nineteen of them. He is often grouped with Ugo Tognazzi, Vittorio Gassman and Nino Manfredi as a defining face of the commedia all'italiana style, and alongside Aldo Fabrizi and Anna Magnani he became one of the screen's defining Roman voices. His honours include a Berlin festival acting prize in 1972, a Golden Globe, and repeated David di Donatello and Nastro d'Argento wins. He never married and stayed closely tied to his native city throughout his life.
