I nuovi mostri
The 1977 Italian film I nuovi mostri (“the new monsters”) is known as Viva l'Italia! in its English-language version. It belongs to the “commedia all'italiana” tradition and is an anthology comedy that mixes humour with drama. It is made up of fourteen episodes with no connecting storyline and runs about 115 minutes. It was conceived as a satire of social conditions in 1970s Italy.
Three directors made the film together: Dino Risi, Ettore Scola and Mario Monicelli. The screenplay is credited to Agenore Incrocci, Furio Scarpelli and Bernardino Zapponi. Vittorio Gassman, Ornella Muti, Ugo Tognazzi and Alberto Sordi head a cast of well-known Italian performers of the day, which also includes Eros Pagni, Luigi Diberti, Paolo Baroni, Margherita Horowitz, Yorgos Voyagis, Carla Mancini, Gianfranco Barra, Vittorio Zarfati and Luciano Bonanni.
I nuovi mostri is a sequel to Dino Risi's 1963 film I mostri, and the series was continued in 2009 with I mostri oggi. Representing Italy, the film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 51st Academy Awards. The original version has fourteen episodes, while some versions have twelve.
