Crimen

Crimen is a 1960 Italian comedy built around a murder mystery, directed by Mario Camerini from a script he shaped together with Rodolfo Sonego and Luciano Vincenzoni. The film gathered a large ensemble of Italian stars of the period, led by Alberto Sordi and Silvana Mangano alongside Vittorio Gassman, Nino Manfredi and Bernard Blier, playing a group whose alibis and secrets get tangled together once a crime needs explaining. It circulated abroad under several alternate titles. The premise proved durable enough to be reused three times elsewhere: Camerini himself revisited it a decade later, an English-language remake starring John Candy and James Belushi followed in the early 1990s under a different director, and Bollywood adapted it again in the mid-2000s with a large ensemble headed by Akshaye Khanna and Shahid Kapoor. That the same comic mystery kept resurfacing across decades and languages says something about how well its farcical structure travelled beyond its original Italian setting.
